Welcome to The Way. You’re about to embark on a journey that will help you dig deeper into God’s Word, the Bible, to learn what it means to be a follower of Christ. While The Way is set up with a logical progression of topics which will lead you deeper in your faith, you don’t have to follow the set order of topics. As you begin, pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you on YOUR journey of faith. You may want to do a study of Prayer that takes you straight from Section 1/Topic 7 to Section 2/Topic 2.
The Way is crafted to be a tool, a guideline. It is not a series of lessons to complete. You may go through it on your own, with another person or even in a group. However you choose to use it, no matter where you are in your journey of faith, you will benefit from The Way. So, before you begin—and after each topic—ask yourself, “What’s My Next Step?” and let the Holy Spirit guide your path and bless your journey in The Way.
The foundation of any Biblical based discipleship must be the Word of God – the Bible. As humans we are prone to rely on our own devices; however, as Believers we find that we have a hunger and desire to learn all there is to know about the One who has become the center of our new life.
As we grow in our Christian walk, just as a newborn moves from mother’s milk to solid food, we too will move from the milk of the Word to nourishment as a mature man or woman in Christ. This only comes through study of the Word of God.
Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
Psalm 12:6 (NLT)
The Lord’s promises are pure,
like silver refined in a furnace,
purified seven times over.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

TRINITY: The doctrine of the Trinity is one of the great mysteries of the Christian Faith. That is, it transcends reason without being contrary to reason. God is one in essence but three in persons. He is a plurality within unity. God is a triunity, not a rigid singularity.
ONE GOD
Deuteronomy 6:4 (NLT)
“Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
THE FATHER IS GOD
Matthew 6:9 (NLT)
Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.
Matthew 6:32 (NLT)
These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.
THE SON IS GOD
John 8:58 (NLT)
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I am!”
Exodus 3:14 (NLT)
God replied to Moses, “I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you.”
Acts 5:3-4 (NLT)
Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. 4 The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!”

God wants believers to be assured of their salvation. He wants us to know without a doubt that, having repented and trusted in Jesus, we have eternal life and will never perish. Believers have this assurance because our salvation depends not on anything we have done—apart from accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior by faith— but on what God has done for us in Christ. Through Christ’s death, God has forgiven our sins and brought us into a new relationship with Himself. God now accepts us as being “in Christ.”
John 3:16-21 (NLT)
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”
John 6:37 (NLT)
However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.
Romans 3:23-25 (NLT)
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past,
Romans 8:35-39 (NLT)
Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 5:24 (NLT)
“I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.”

Baptism is an important picture of just how much our lives are changed—we died to sin and have been made alive in Christ. It’s a big step, but it’s also a simple step.
Christian baptism is a ceremony commanded by Jesus, by which Christians make a public confession that they have repented of their sins and committed themselves in faith to Jesus as their Savior and Lord.
The Bible speaks of people going into the water to be baptized, but it gives no detailed description of the act of baptism. The original meaning of ‘baptize’ was ‘dip’ or ‘immerse’, suggesting that believers were immersed in water. According to Paul’s teaching, baptism is an expression of union with Christ in dying to sin and being raised with Christ to new life. When Christ died and rose again, believers died and rose again in baptism.
Baptism is an important picture of how our lives have changed. To be baptized at Big Valley Grace, you will need to attend the Baptism class. Click here to learn more and sign up for the next available class.

Everyone has a world view, a lens through which we see the things around us. Our world view defines how we look at the world around us and make sense of reality. It also governs the way we act, how we define right and wrong, and forms the basis for decisions about life. As we grow in our faith we will find that there is a distinct difference in what society tells us about truth and what God’s word says.
John 14:6 (NLT)
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
John 16:12-15 (NLT)
“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

The grace of God is one of the most important subjects in all of Scripture. At the same time it is probably one of the least understood. What is God’s grace? How do we appropriate God’s grace? How do we deal with perfectionism? Is grace really amazing? Is grace sufficient to meet all my needs? Does grace really mean that we are forgiven?
The Bible teaches we are not only saved by grace, but we also live by grace every day of our lives. However, most of us tend to base our personal relationship with God on our performance instead of on His grace. In this sense, we live by works rather than by grace.
If grace is described as “getting what you don’t deserve,” then mercy, on the other hand, can be described as NOT getting what you do deserve.

In its simplest form, prayer is nothing more than talking to God and listening for His response. Many would argue that it is another form of our worship of God. Simply put, “Prayer is the expression of the human heart in conversation with God.”
A.C.T.S. is a simple pattern for prayer, It’s balanced, it’s easy to use, and it incorporates the basics of what Jesus taught to His disciples. All you have to remember is the word A.C.T.S., an acrostic whose four letters stand for adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication.
Psalm 66:17-18 (NLT)
For I cried out to him for help,
praising him as I spoke.
18 If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
Romans 8:26-27 (NLT)
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.
Philippians 1:9 (NLT)
I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.
Luke 11:1 (NLT)
Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
Psalm 8
O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
2 You have taught children and infants
to tell of your strength,
silencing your enemies
and all who oppose you.
3 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
4 what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?
5 Yet you made them only a little lower than God
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You gave them charge of everything you made,
putting all things under their authority—
7 the flocks and the herds
and all the wild animals,
8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that swims the ocean currents.
9 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Philippians 4:6 (NLT)
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)
Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 2.18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

While trials and temptations may seem to be the same thing or very similar, they are actually quite different. Bottom line is that the next time a situation arises and you wonder whether you are facing a trial or a temptation the answer is probably both. From the standpoint of your sinful flesh it is an opportunity to tempt you to sin, to tear you down, to deceive you, and for you to worship self. But from God’s standpoint, it is an opportunity for you to prove your faith, mature and grow, remain steadfast, bring about wholeness and completion, and to worship and trust God.

Jesus made it very clear that forgiveness is an essential part of Christian life. Understanding true forgiveness helps us understand the depths of God’s love for us. Understanding our responsibility to exercise that same forgiveness, and doing it, is probably one of the most difficult things we will do as followers of Christ.
As humans we struggle with forgiveness. In spite of our anger, embarrassment, or hurt, forgiveness requires an intentional decision to give mercy and grace to another for the wrong they have committed.
Forgiveness is not accomplished by saying we are sorry. It is accomplished by a conscious and willful decision to change the way we think and feel about the person.

Anything that we do that brings pleasure to God is an act of worship. Anthropologists have noted that worship is universal, hard-wired by God into the very fiber of our being – an inbuilt need to connect with God. Worship is as natural as eating or breathing. If we fail to worship God, we always find a substitute, even if it ends up being ourselves. The reason God made us with this desire is because He desires worshippers!
God wants all of you, not just part of your life. He asks for all of your heart, all of your soul, all of your mind, and all of your strength. He desires your full devotion. The heart of worship is total surrender by offering ourselves to God.

God created the entire universe because He wanted a family. God doesn’t want His children to be orphans. He doesn’t want His children to be street kids. So, He adopts them into His family, e.g. the body of Believers, the Church and the Christian community.
God formed us for His family. If God had not wanted a family you wouldn’t exist. But God made you because He loves you, and He wants you to love Him back, and He wants you to be a part of His family. We were formed for God’s family. This has been His plan from the very beginning of time.

The concept of serving is a fundamental part of the Christian walk. It is the expression of our love for God and for others, and should have the sole purpose of bringing glory to our Heavenly Father. Service does not earn us salvation, rather we follow Christ’s example to be a servant.

Justification: The process by which an individual is brought into a right relationship with another person, including God. Justification is frequently referred to as righteousness.
Sanctification: The process of being made holy resulting in a changed life-style for the Believer.
While we are not only justified at the time of our acceptance of Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we begin the process of becoming sanctified.
